The UFC on Saturday pins its promotional hopes on fast-rising talents in the 125-popund weigh class, as the once-beaten Tatsuro Taira collides with the undefeated Hyun Sung Park in the UFC on ESPN 71 main event. Meanwhile, Mateusz Rebecki squares off with Chris Duncan in the three-round lightweight co-headliner at 155 pounds.
Taira, 25, started his career with 16 consecutive wins, six of them inside the Octagon. However, the former Shooto champion finds himself on the rebound after a five-round split decision defeat to Brandon Royval at UFC Fight Night 244 on Oct. 12. Taira has delivered 12 of his 16 professional victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission. On the other side of the ledger, the 29-year-old Park has blazed through his first 10 opponents. The “Road to UFC” Season 1 winner last saw action on May 17, when he put away Carlos Hernandez with a rear-naked choke in the first round of their encounter at UFC Fight Night 256. It was Park’s ninth straight finish.
