Ronnie Gibbs an 'Underdog with Teeth' in PFL Upset Win Over Biaggio Ali Walsh
Ronnie
Gibbs was massive underdog against the previously undefeated
Biaggio
Ali Walsh at
PFL World Tournament 7.
Fighting in his hometown of Chicago, Gibbs’ only concern was himself. After a tough first round between the two, Gibbs pulled off a comeback and shocking submission victory, handing Ali Walsh the first loss of his young professional career.
It was a statement victory for someone competing in just his second
professional bout — especially on home soil.
“It means everything to me to get the victory in my hometown,” Gibbs said. “To come out and finally get the opportunity to do what I’ve been doing and do so in front of my people, my city, my mom came for this one and she told me not to let him mess up my face, and I think I did a good job. She made it to this fight, and that’s what I needed to prevail.”
Recognizing his role as an underdog, Gibbs knows he broke the hearts of many bettors. He took notice of how overlooked he was throughout fight week.
“We f—-d up a lot of parlays tonight, I know that much,” he said. “This was a statement, it’s about showing people who I am. Even the media, everyone walked past me until this performance tonight. I did what I was supposed to do. I introduced the game to the art of finesse, and now I’m not just Ronnie Gibbs, I’m the ‘Emperor of Finesse’”
After being knocked down by Ali Walsh in the first round, Gibbs put together a strong comeback that got him the second round victory. Gibbs acknowledged the power that Ali Walsh had, but he wasn’t going to be denied on this night.
“Biaggio can hit. Everyone knows he can hit and he showed coming into this fight that he can hit,” Gibbs said .”He’s the real deal, he’s a real fighter. He knocked me on my ass. I was an underdog, but everyone failed to realize I’m an underdog with teeth.”
Gibbs would wrap up his post-fight press conference by expressing his gratitude for the PFL and the opportunity they gave him in just his second professional fight.
